Before a record TV audience, the Saints, behind by 10-6 and kicking off, opened the second half of the Super Bowl by
recovering an onside kick (note to Colt: use your hands, not your
helmet, to catch the ball) and proceeded to outscore Indianapolis 25-7
the rest of the way. In classic Saints fashion though, and in tribute to
the great play of the Colts Quarterback, the game was in doubt until Tracy Porter’s interception-touchdown
with just under 4 minutes to play in the fourth quarter. 31-17 Saints
– 5+.
That I was hanging with a pro-Colts crowd I began to discern as the game progressed. When the Saints took the lead with a touchdown and 2-point conversion with just under 6 minutes to play, the mood was somber but confident. Then the Porter interception – a dagger to the heart – and the excitement of the Colt's drive for the tie devolved into a mumble/rumble punctuated by uniformed young ladies grimly stuffing post party jetsom into black garbage bags. After that we all dissembled into the nite, having participated in our freshest secular holiday, well-served and unusually alert.
Next day, the Saints were installed at 10-1 for winning the big one next year, behind the Colts, Chargers and Patriots. Next year gets here quickly.
