Just Because it’s lost,
doesn’t mean we need to find it
In a typically post-capitalist moment, renewal in America comes via a forest fire. Some old ranger
I remember once pondering the phenomenon of an office professional I once hired taking 30 minutes to OCR (Optical Character Recognition) a document when she could have transcribed it in ten. She did this not because she or we were idiots, but because we had a reasonably absurd expectation of a preferred result . Somebody from outside the set had to make the impertinent observation of what the short term loss was and that the long term wasn’t worth investing in. There are some practical uses of ICR, but this wasn’t, and never would be, one of them.
Which gets me to the point: Stop making my life better.
With IT revolutions working on 18-24-36 mo. cycles, burn-out hits the fast track. We idolize the young because they can “figure this stuff out like I can’t”. But the main problem of being young is if you’re LUCKY, you will get old, Then you’re ouuta luck
The insistence of capitalism isn’t the monetary reward it produces (store ye not treasures on earth…) but the faith in/that something greater than us is really out there, and we can access it with knowledge. We can know Truth. By knowing truth, we can somehow “game” the system, we can out-run and out-(s)mart IT.
For a hominid – all too typically – knowledge and society turn TRUTH into dogma. And Dogma is poison to capitalism, the least painful system of renewal. The revolutions capitalism give birth to have one significant advantage over all others, they are most likely the ones that will produce hope...and try livin’ without that.
The truth of capitalism lies in its fact, not it’s dogma – that markets rise spontaneously and are then destroyed by both their successes and failures. Markets, like democracy, are NATURAL social orders that spontaneously arise when certain levels of social and capital exchange thresh-holds have been reached, and collapse when they outlive their convenience, then ossified into convenient ideological certainties. This swamp is everybodie’s private playground in the post-information age. You need to get there? Get an App.
Capitalism is not moral. It finds a vacuum and fills it. If you measure your worth off of this system, it will turn you into the eggs of somebody elses’ breakfast. Then they in turn will be devoured by somebody else. A good measure of your own pain can be equally applied to everybody else you know, or will ever know. Never doubt the experience of pain in otherz.
Step outside, and throw away your cheap excuses. Only then, will you be able to live with them. Don’t worry , Be something?
